I hate to play devils advocate with the Microsoft logo, but I was actually a fan when I first saw it, and still think its smart.
The type is nothing special, and dangerously close to apple, so I’ll get that out of the way first. But I’m glad they took the simple approach with the type, because it’s really all about the image here.
It’s an abstraction of the old windows logo, basically boiled down to it’s core. So it references the familiar as far as the branding for the company. But it looks EXACTLY like what the tile based windows operating system for smart phones looks like, and let’s be honest that’s what’s going to be substantially important to Microsoft in the near future (and really, right now).

Once this iteration of the image takes hold in consumer’s minds, I think Microsoft will (or would be able to) ditch the word ‘Microsoft’ from their logo and use solely the 4-panel square image as their logo.
